Authorized Materials

Lab members wishing to introduce new materials into this system must first obtain authorization from staff. New material requests must be initiated by submitting a Process Review Request form.

Non compliance will result in loss of member privileges

The system is configured to handle sample pieces less than 10 mm x 10 mm.

Pieces must be mounted on specially made flag style sample plates.

Samples must be conductive for STM imaging.

IMPORTANT: Heating to high temperatures is possible in the preparation chamber, however polymers and adhesives will burn at these elevated temperatures. This action will contaminate the UHV chamber! Always consult with staff for guidance on proper mounting and treatment of your sample for your experimental requirements.

Samples can optionally be mounted using an approved conductive UHV epoxy (eg. Epotec H21D) but cannot be heated pass 200 degrees in this case.

Omicron approved specialty plates (4 point, direct current heating etc.) or molydenum sample plates with clamps are available for special high-temperature treatment process.

Authorized Substrates and Thin Films

PROHIBITED Substrates & Films

The possibility of introducing the following films has been studied. Our research has concluded that the risk of chamber contamination is too high. Thus, these materials are NOT ALLOWED in this system:
  • Any polymeric films, photoresist, E-beam resist, tapes, adhesives
